The interdisciplinary Research Center Future Energy Materials and Systems (RC FEMS) aims to develop new, urgently needed materials for future-proof, sustainable energy systems. To this end, RC FEMS occupies essential interfaces between established focus topics. This enables a holistic approach, combining strong interdisciplinary expertise and scientific creativity to make a decisive contribution to the future of energy, built on new materials.
The goal is to understand fundamental properties and relevant processes for future materials design in order to realize a knowledge-based development, replacing a so far often empirical and sequential approach. Therefore, the ways in which composition and processing influence materials structures and properties are considered along all relevant length scales from the atom to the component.
At the Research Center for Future Energy Materials and Systems, we are dedicated to developing cutting-edge materials essential for energy conversion, storage, transport, and the generation of energy carriers. Our mission is to drive scientific discoveries and innovation through collaborations of our newly appointed professors and the strong research environment of three universities in the Ruhr area.
The innovative research work of the Research Centre Future Energy Materials and Systems is based on successful, cross-location collaboration within the framework of national and international large-scale projects. The research buildings at the University of Duisburg-Essen and the Ruhr University Bochum also provide the highest quality infrastructure for interdisciplinary collaboration. The Ruhr area has developed into one of Europe’s densest academic regions. And the University Alliance Ruhr (UA Ruhr), which embodies technological and social transformation through top-level research, has been at its center since 2007. Academics from around the world find attractive conditions for a career in future-oriented research fields here. In addition, students benefit from an education environment that extends across multiple universities. Find out more about the UA Ruhr here:
